DXM Drug

DXM drug, also known as dextromethorphan, is an effective cough suppressant ingredient found in over-the-counter cough medicines. When taken according to directions, products containing DXM produce few side effects and have a long history of safety and effectiveness. When abused as an illicit drug, DXM is dissociative, like PCP and ketamine. Taken in recreational doses, which far exceed recommended doses, DXM can cause serious damage, like any other drug.

Why Shawn, 23, Stopped Using DXM Drug:
"I had, you know, an enlightenment, I guess you’d say. I looked back at my life, I look at all the wonderful people I hurt, all the things I lost – anything and everything that I did to people that I had to apologize to. There are still days today to that that I’ll be walking down the street and somebody will see me and turn and run the other way because of the way I acted and the things I did. It hurts – it hurts inside. I just saw myself and what I had done to people and I just couldn’t do it no more. The only person who I really cared about at the time being my mom – was hurting the worst.

"After I came to the conclusion that I wanted to quit, after I had been totally clean for six months. What did I do? I walked to the drug store and bought a bottle and I drank it. And I went home and sat down and talked to my mom and she had no clue. Not at all – she was telling me how proud she was of me and how good I was doing – and it seriously destroyed me. And that was it. I was done. From that point on I decided I was done [with the drug.]"
