Robitussin Abuse
Robitussin abuse is taking non-recommended, extremely large doses of over-the-counter cough medicines, such as Robitussin, in order to get high. The "high" is caused by taking a large amount of
dextromethorphan (DXM), a common active ingredient found in many cough medications.
Shawn, 23, Talks About Robitussin Abuse:

“Well, I personally no longer take [Robitussin] if I get sick – I deal with it because I know I can’t touch it. I stay away from drug stores because I know if I go into a drug store and I see the cough medicine aisle and the first thing I want to do is run right down there and grab [Robtussin].
“For me, it’s just knowing if I abuse it again I’m gonna lose all my friends, mess up my family and end right back up in jail. And I don’t want to screw it up again. I’m starting to rebuild my burned bridges and I’m really happy with the way things are going right now and I know if I touch it I’m gone.
“Regardless of what I say, kids are gonna do what they want to do [and abuse drugs]. But I would tell you that it’s not going to take you anywhere. It feels great, wonderful – it’s not gonna take you anywhere at all. You’re gonna go down the tubes, end up without a house, without friends, without family – and you’re gonna be all alone. And eventually, you’re not going to have yourself anymore.”
